City Announces the 2011 Immigrant Resource Event

August 2, 2011

Saturday, August 13, 2011

On Saturday August 13, 2011 the City of Chicago, Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection (BACP), together with sponsors CONFEMEX and Western Union, will host an Immigrant Resource Event. The event is free and open to the public, and is being offered to connect people with immigrant resources and information.

“We want to ensure individuals seeking immigrant services know what legitimate organizations and resources are available to them as well as provide them valuable information,” said Rosemary Krimbel, Commissioner of the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection.

"Access to information is key to the success of the immigrant community, CONFEMEX is pleased to present this event in collaboration with Western Union and the City of Chicago" said Julio Cortes, president of CONFEMEX.

At the event, attendees can speak with experts and obtain resources on the:

  • Updated federal immigration regulations
  • Legal rights on deportation, detention and asylum
  • Immigration fraud
  • Legalization process and permanent residency advice.

In addition, an open panel Q&A session will be offered to answer questions by experts from Illinois Attorney General, Illinois Coalition for Immigrant & Refugee Rights, the National Immigrant Justice Center and Latinos Progresando.

The event will increase consumer awareness about fraud and deceptive practices.  Individuals seeking professional immigrant services are often the victims of deception or fraud by “firms” or “professionals” who make promises they can’t keep, leaving people out of money and out of proper representation.

Other government and not for profit agencies will be on hand to answer questions and provide information such as the, the Legal Assistance Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago, World Relief, Instituto del Progresso Latino, Mujeres Latinas en Accion, Federal Trade Commission, the IRS, ACCION, Department of Family and Support Services and BACP - call 312.744.5344.
